Storyboard/Animatic

May 06, 2018

As I was doing my storyboard, I found some really useful tips which helped tremendously. If I had done my storyboard before reading it, it would probably would have been much more static.

Ps. This is not required, but because I did my drawings on A4, resolutions of each picture is not very clear if I were to do an animatic out of it. If you want them to be of better quality, you have to crop each individual photo, put it through illustrator, then photoshop and finally premier Pro.

Rationale: Illustrator is used to make the image into vector works so that once blown up, it would not be pixelated and quality would still be good. Photoshop is then used to get the correct sizing for the video.

BUTTTTT.... Fun fact: Did you know that you can actually just scan high resolution photo through photoshop directly? Just open the app, go to file > import images from devices > crop each box > change resolution to the highest and save. Oh and if you are not sure which format to save it under, you can follow this brief rule of thumb:
PNG: For transparency (if you have anything which is transparent which you want to layover something else later)
TIFF: If your image have colours (able to capture the colour gradient and tone better)
JPEG: If your image is in black and white (slightly lower quality than the others but nothing is compromised. It just would not take up as much space on your laptop)

I also saw this storyboard online of Jurassic Park which I thought petty cool. I like it because Lowery does not let himself be limited to the framing aspect ratio. He draws out of it, which creates some really interesting compositions. Even his arrows and directions are clear and straight to the point as well.

This is a short animatic I made out of my storyboard. It is of the scene where the witches appear before Macbeth and gives him the 3 visions of the future. Instead of creating having Macbeth stumbling upon them after a battle, I made them appear to him at his home. This is because the theme of facade and deception is heavily employed in Macbeth and I wanted to contrast the evil embodiment of the witches to the zen garden and peace in his household, which later transform from his private sanctuary to his prison of inner ambition.

Ps. For the opening title, I went to https://pngtree.com to get a PNG of a brush stroke and edited my words on top of it afterwards in Key Note.

Remember how I mentioned earlier that if you want to use transparent things, you have to save it under PNG. Yeah. REMEMBER THAT.
