Prop Houses

February 07, 2018

It feels somewhat surreal visiting some of the prop houses because each of them varies so much! For instance, Farley's prop house is probably the most high end with periodic furnitures and extravagant chandeliers. They also have original, copyright free paintings that you could use in films.

Superhire covers a large range of stuff. They do 50-80 century furnitures all the way to modern day accessories. Some people might find their catalogue a bit messy, but I love it. They have lamps, tv, microwaves, DVD players, cookery (Pots and pans), garden stuff, fake plants, games (Jukebox/Carnival/Arcade)...etc The list is endless.

Architecturally, A and M Hire has to be my favourite. I mean, this is the first sight that greets you when you enter! I did not know if I was in a prop house or a museum!

Rough Summary on what can be found there
If I were to label a high school stereotype to each of them, I would say:
Farley's: (The Rich)
Superhire: (Your Best Friend)
A and M: (The Unique)
But that is just my opinion...

Another which I notice from all these visits, is the magic of perception. They say seeing is believing, but is it really? ;)

For instance:
What the Camera sees
Reality
Files and folders to rent
And yes, you read the caption correctly, to RENT. I know it seems crazy since each household probably already has some files and folders lying around, but it is so much easier if you can rent everything from one place rather than having to collect them from multiple places. This is especially useful if you need them in bulks to dress a set such as an office.

General pointers on sourcing props

Anyway, these are just some of my observation and the few prop houses I visited. There are still so many out there in London and here is a list of some of the other prop houses:

Oh and digressing a bit, A and M Hire have this little spiral staircase by the reception which brings you up to a mini outdoor garden. It kinda reminds me of the Conservatory at the Barbican, but a much more private sanctuary. So if you are ever there, do pop your head up and take a look at it.

(Had an internal debate if I should post the small video clips of the garden here because I know all of you videographers out there is probably itching to kill me for filming it the wrong way wrong. Ops! Rookie mistake!)
