FlashDance

October 06, 2017

My friends love to tease me and say that I am an old soul living in a teenage body because unlike my peers, I prefer reading to clubbing, staying in to going out, and well, today is another day when Granny Stef strikes again!

The theatre was mostly filled with mums and grannies, and in the midst of all of them, there I was. A tiny blob in the sea of grownups.

I got to admit, I was a little curious on how they were going to construct the set for Flashdance because there are a few different key places where the action takes place. The first being Alex's (the protagonist) day time work place, the steel mill, the night bar where she works in and the prestigious dace school which she wants to study in. These are 3 completely contrasting place, which means the sets have to be easily taken apart and brought in for each scene change. But what they did was quite clever. Instead of having 3 separate sets, there was only universal set which consist of 2 metal stairways and 4 door size screens. Which with little adjustments, minor tweaks and projections, they are able to give the illusion of 3 separate sets when the scene changes. I was most impressed by the way the stairs played into both the functional and aesthetic role. There was one scene especially when the protagonist is walking up the stairs doing a musical number, with dancers at the bottom who helped turned the stairs in the other direction, so instead of walking up the stairs, she appears to be walking down from it and straight into the next scene when the musical number comes to an end. If that is not a flawless transition, I dunno what is.

Call me an oldie, but I do love some good old classics music. With that, I shall part with the lyrics from one of their hit songs, << What A Feeling >>.
