Rice Production/ Oscar Romero (In Oxford)

November 02, 2017

This is my first ever small scale production which I have seen. It consist of only 3 men and they did everything, from the costume, sounds and acting! I watched it when I was up in Oxford for a day trip, but before I get to that, can I just say that the architecture interest of the city left me in awe.

Oxford is a small city, known for its prestigious universities. I had always thought Oxford University was one single university. So it came as a shock when I learned that there are actually 38 colleges under them!

When I first heard about this university, I heard it as "Oreo (The chocolate biscuit) University". It was only later that I found out it is called "Oriel University", and that it got its name from the windows. This particular type of windows are called oriels. It is a "large upper storey bay with a window, supported by brackets or on corbels".

Photo I took of 'Oriel University'

Apart from its universities, I also really like their quaint little coloured houses. It is so picturesque and reminds me of something that came out of a storybook.

But getting back on topic, here is how the set of Rice production's Oscar Romero play look like. Fairly simply, but still equally effective.

Set for Oscar Romero Play

The set is made out of a few boxes, and a large 6 panel hand painting. In the further left two panels, there is a small grey screen where a projection is played upon it. This acted as a "calendar" of some sort to tell us the different period as we whizz through Romero's life. It added a little context for each new scene.

In a way, the set kind of reminds me of the play "The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Nighttime" as it too, only used simple construction. Conveniently, it is also my absolutely favourite play, but it stopped it's running in London already. :( HOWEVER, all hope is not lost. I heard it is coming to Singapore soon, so Singaporean friends, please look out for it!
